Conhecer-me / Getting to know myself

A princípio não teve piada nenhuma, custou-me como nada me tinha custado antes.

I don't like living alone. I lived alone for nine months in a students' residence, surrounded by people I got to know and to like and that liked me, as well and, still, I found myself several times awake in the middle of the night, thinking what am I doing here, all by myself, with no one to talk to, away from those who really know me? I was one door knock away from them.
Now I am forced to live alone, to walk in and out of an empty home, to sleep on a bed that is too big for me, to rely on my own alarm to wake me up in the morning, to have dinner all alone at least twice a week (luckily, I have company for the other ones) and to make plans only for me.
At first it wasn't funny at all and it was hard like nothing had ever been before. All of my fears were increased and I used to pay attention to every single noise, thinking it was the end of it for me, I used to avoid thinking about him coming home in the evening or waking me up in the morning with his premature alarm, so I wouldn't start crying my eyes out.
In the meantime, missing him was stronger than any fear I used to have, so, gradually, I started being able to enjoy my alone moments, and the invitations I wouldn't accept if he was here. I still don't like living alone, this kind of life wasn't meant for me, because if on the one hand I get easily sick of some people, on the other hand I need to be surrounded by the ones I love all the time. However, I realized I am able to do much more than I thought I was, especially when it comes to driving. I wasn't always a fan, but since I started practicing (two or three years ago) I found out a connection between me and steering wheels, but I am terrible with directions, which makes me stress out when I have to drive to a place I have never been before.
Since he left and left me the car, I received many invitations to go to places I had never gone alone or with someone else. I went. And I realized that I stopped stressing out, that when I get lost (it only happened once) I can stay calm and find the way back.
I'm still terrible when it comes to parking, though. Baby steps...
